An exquisite scene unfolds an arial view of The Outpost from the Lookout Tree

The 27 kms from Pakawau to Mangarakau’s Outpost is without a doubt, one of the most picturesque drives you will ever take.

The Outpost is approximately

  • 3½ hrs drive from Nelson.

  • 2 hours from Motueka , depending on how distracted you are by the sites.

  • 1 hour from Takaka, the 60 odd kms take a little longer due to the gravel road.

Takaka & Collingwood are your last stops for substantial supplies.

Head along the main road toward Collingwood.

Turn left at Zatori and then take the next right to cross the small one-lane bridge heading towards Pakawau, the next small town.    Drive with caution as you will encounter multiple one way bridges. before you reach the small village of Pakawau.

Pakawau Beach Camp is the last stop for gas and munchies.  Don't forget you will need enough petrol for the return journey.  Drive right through to the end of Pakawau, then turn left at the at Pakawau memorial hall.   The road sign is marked Westhaven / Whanganui Inlet, Mangarakau and the Anatori.

The road becomes  a well maintained shingle road.   The 27 km from Pakawau to The Outpost is without a doubt one of the most picturesque drives you will ever have the pleasure of taking.

Drink in the sites including the impressive Rata blooms (Dec/Jan) as you cross coastal rivers over 11 cleverly built causeways.

Once  you are on the tar-seal look to the right for our signage.  If you run out of tar seal you have gone too far!

Past The Outpost the road continues on to Anatori where the landscape turns to nikau and punga forests, multiple rivers and an almost untouched coastline.

Once you reach us you will not want to leave.  Escape from the chaos of your daily lives to a place of adventure play or complete peace & tranquillity.

"...a lifetime memory."

I had the most unforgettable time at The Outpost.  Very comfortable, super affordable, cosy atmosphere, environmentally conscious and well immersed in priceless nature.  Greg and Rows  were some of the finest people I've met on my trip through New Zealand, warm, friendly and generous human beings.  I had no plans to stay there but cheerfully 'got stuck' in this secluded paradise for 3 days.  Thank you for making my stay a lifetime memory.  Definitely will be revisiting - 10 stars out of 5
