Map

the Outpost is approx 3½ hrs drive from Nelson and 1-1½ hrs from Takaka.

From Motueka, Takaka is 55kms over a the Takaka Hill, sometimes referred to as Marble Mountain.

Motueka, Takaka & Collingwood are your last stops for substantial supplies.

You will need enough petrol for the return Journey so Pakawau Beach Camp is the final pump but there is also a is a pump in Collingwood.

From Collingwood you have just 42kms to go.  Head along the main road until you come to the first intersection. Turn right (at Joan Whiting rest home) and cross the small one-lane bridge heading towards Pakawau.

Turn left at the at Pakawau memorial hall. The road sign is marked Westhaven / Whanganui Inlet & Mangarakau.  The road becomes  a well maintained shingle road.

The 27kms from Pakawau to Mangarakau’s Outpost is without a doubt, one of the most picturesque drives you will ever take. Drink in the sites including the impressive Rata blooms (Dec/Jan) as you cross coastal rivers over 11 cleverly built causeways.

Upon reaching the old Mangarakau Wharf it is just a few more kms.  Once on the tar-seal look to the right for our signage.  If you run out of tar seal you have gone too far!

Past The Outpost the road continues on to Anatori, where it turns to forest, river and almost untouched coastline.

The journey is worth it.  Once you reach us you will not want to leave. Escape from the chaos of your daily lives to a place of play, peace & tranquility.
