The Outpost was Mangarakau Primary School, for 50+ years.  Today it is a Group Accommodation facility, a rarity in New Zealand.   You can stay as a family, a group, as a single guest or hire the entire facility.

A well equipped kitchen with all cutlery, crockery, pots and pans is provided.  Oven, two microwaves, gas hobs and two large fridge freezers.  Toasters, kettles, a big pantry for food storage, plenty of bench space and a wide servery window between kitchen and dining area, making food sharing ideal for big groups.

Large dinning and lounge hall with ample tables, chairs and comfy couches.

Toasty log fire!  Wood provided with axe to cut kindling.

Salt water swimming pool (primary age).

Laundry includes washing machine, tub and clothes line.

Three hot showers.

Three composting toilets.

Disabled facilities include toilet and shower at ground level. Ramp access.

Spacious grounds with plenty of room for tents and campers.


Each bedroom contains one double bed and single bunks. The smallest bedroom sleeps a maximum of 5, the largest 9.  Mattress, pillow and sheet provided.

Double cabin available by arrangement.

There is a guest phone for calls to NZ landlines. 

Pets welcome by arrangement and must be wormed for sheep measles ($3 from your own vet).

Cellphone reception is patchy but a signal can be found, talk to us.  Enquire at reception.

There are currently no EFTPOS or credit card facilities.  Payment details will be advised at time of booking.

What to Bring

Everything you need for an enjoyable Kiwi camping holiday! 

Food, beverages, bedding including sleeping bags/blankets, first aid kit, sunscreen, insect repellent (or try ours), rubbish bags, sports gear.

Soaps and detergents should be septic tank friendly.  If you can‘t find a suitable shampoo or detergent, relax.  These can be provided.

Enough fuel for the return journey.
